I own the Asus Eee PC 4G - is it great and for being my first UMPC I don't think I could have done better - infact I'm posting this blog from my Eee PC right now.

Only thing about this blog post is I doubt the 10" version will come out - the 7" is really great and I didn't think it would be this easy to use!

That's true, though with the dollar going down... I bought mine from a store in the U.S. since I wanted an American keyboard layout. If you don't mind an American keyboard, you could probably do the same and figure another $50 to $100 USD in shipping. (International shipping has gotten ridiculous. :( ) I've heard good things about Toshibas, but I've never had one.

@Ming: Thanks. If there was a $250 available in The Netherlands I would have bought one already. Unfortunately, dollar to euro conversions always work out poorly for us here in europe, and as far as I can tell there's no T23 available here. In fact, the very cheapest Thinkpad I could find is $1000+.

I've been eying the Toshiba L30 and L40 series, but both are still in the $800 area when configured with decent amounts of RAM.

Hey Roy, if you just need something for email, the web and blog updates, why don't you just pick up a used Thinkpad T23 and put Ubuntu on it? Mine was about $250 USD and does everything I need it to. I had one of the heavy AMD64 laptops with the huge screen and lots of bells and whistles. Now it just sits in the server closet and I ssh to it if I need more resources to run something. (Well, and it's an NFS server for more storage space.)

The T23 is a little bigger than what you've been looking at, but IBM also did the X40 which is very lightweight and will be reaching the end of it's lease lifetime at a lot of places. (Though IIRC some of those have a motherboard defect which kills them, so I'm not sure how many will actually be surfacing on the used market, and I wouldn't suggest going that route if you can't get some kind of extended warranty that would cover it for at least a year.)

The #1 laptop I've ever had was a Hitachi Visionbook, and despite the fact that by current standards it had all the processing power of plankton and weighed a ton, it was virtually indestructible, eminently reliable, and all around a fantastic little machine. It was a P2 350 w/ 136 MB Ram (originally it had 40 IIRC, the weird number comes from having 8 on board plus what's in the slot). I used to run OpenBSD w/ Fluxbox on mine; it installed like a charm when Debian balked. It was slow, of course, but I was actually using it up until about a year ago for email, IM, and the web. It was also fine as a terminal to something bigger and better. Unfortunately I think Hitachi is only selling in Japan now. :( If they still have the same kind of quality, I'd probably love another of those even more than the Thinkpad.

Sry. I digress.

[...] That’s why I asked 2checkout.com to cancel my order of a Medison Celebrity laptop. With the Eee-PC hitting shops any day now and laptop prices dropping like bricks there’s no need to wait [...]

I actually have a Nokia N800 and think it's great...still the ASUS looks like a better option for the simple reason that stylus operated device screens get scratched too fast and too easily
