Setting up XEPC on the Eee-PC 901 XP

Wow, that was easy! I just installed XEPC (Linux) on my 901 Eee-PC, and it required nowhere near as many steps as most (probably older) tutorials will have you believe. All you need to do is download the iso image from Sourceforge, use 7-Zip to copy its contents to a USB stick (2GB or more) and run the included ‘makeboot.bat’ file. Your USB stick will then be bootable, and all you need to do is boot off of it (by pressing ESC during boot). The onscreen instructions will guide you through the rest.

Five minutes later your machine will boot into XEPC’s tweaked version of Asus’ Eee version of Xandros Linux. I encourage every 901 XP owner to try it. This is an operating system that was created for the Eee, and you can tell.

It boots very quickly, and once it’s up you’ll find everything you need in a very easy to use interface. I view my netbook as an appliance more than a laptop replacement. I wanted something to easily and quickly check my email, surf for a bit and maybe chat with a buddy. Linux is perfect for that. With XP I needed to set up a firewall, an anti-virus program, Firefox and Miranda before I could even get started. And all of those would require frequent updates just to be able to browse safely. Not fun.

Both wireless networking and the Eee’s built-in webcam worked ‘out of the box’, as well as the ‘Hybrid Engine’ that lets you choose different performance modes in order to conserve battery power.

If you want a more powerful user interface, you can enable the ‘full desktop mode‘. It looks very much like Windows, but is very usable nontheless ;). I found myself reverting back to the simple mode, because that will let me launch Firefox and Pidgin even more easily. It’s nice to have the option though, in case I ever get the urge to tinker. For now, I’m quite happy not knowing wat ’sudo’, ‘apt-get’ and ‘wget’ mean.

I think I’ll stay with Linux for a while. I can always revert back to Windows if I want, the machine has a valid XP license attached to it. But from what I’ve seen so far, XEPC seems much better suited for my needs.

  1. I want OS X on it… instant on… is that too much to ask or does it mean I have to spend $2600 on a MacBook Air with Solid State Disk?

  2. A quick question before I type “yes”: is this a Live CD or does “Ready to image Eee PC” actually mean that it will overwrite my XP image with the Xandros system?

  3. Pierre, yes it will completely replace both your OS and data. I’m not sure if there’s a live CD for Xandros available, but this is not it :) .

  4. Is there anyway to do the opposite thing ,that is load xp on a eee pc 901 running Linux?

  5. @Peter: Yeah, there’s nothing keeping you from doing so. All the drivers for XP should beon the DVD you got with your Eee-PC. All you need is an external DVD drive and a valid license key.

  7. Do you have the option to install the system to another partition, for ex a mounted USB?

    Comment by Ebbe — December 3, 2008 @ 2:18 pm

  8. @Ebbe: XEPC is distributed as a recovery CD for the eee-pc. It might be possible to install it onto an USB drive, but I wouldn’t know how to.

  9. tried on eeepc 900hd touchpad doesn’t work, audio doesn’t work, second hard disk doesn’t work

  10. @roy, thanks to this, i was able to install the xepc-901-recovery.iso onto my 901.

Problem tho is I find the touchpad very badly configured with this install.. especially compared with xp and other linux distros like ubuntu… the touchpad driver or xorg settings seem deficient.. even with settings maxed out, the two finger vertical scrolling is hard to use… very little sensitivity..

is there a setting or new driver that i need?

  11. @Venger. I wouldn’t be able to help you with that, but I’ve seen this issue come by on forums like eeeuser.com.

  13. if i buy a dongle or whatever it called will i b able to use it wireless online

    Comment by kim — December 21, 2008 @ 1:26 pm

  14. Hi Kim. If you have a wireless router, your Eee-PC should be able to connect to it. Most recent one have a very advanced wifi card on board (’wireless-n’), and connecting to your network should be as easy as selecting it and enter the security passphrase (WPA or WEP key, if any).

I’ve set up my Asus 901 to run Ubuntu Linux version 8.10 (which is a very good Linux distribution), so I won’t be able to guide you through the exact screens, but it shouldn’t be too hard.

  15. I followed the steps to install XEPC on my eee 901 but everytime I try to re-boot the computer it tells me to insert a bootable media. Any ideas?
