"Apparently, a RAID setup was their only data backup they had in place, and that doesn’t protect you from some types of threat."

Correction: They had no data backup.

@Josa: No, I wouldn't know that. Although not backing up your home computer isn't something you can blame AOL for, I feel your pain. The blog I deleted didn't have a lot of interesting content, except for some stuff about my daughter...

I lost my first blog when AOL closed its blogs down. It was precious and I did back it up, but on my home computer, which has a Novell system which has collapsed. I am sad because there was a lot of stuff about my baby growing up. Do you know if they may have our data somewhere stored? You aren't the right person to ask of course....

I remember that in the early days of blogging there was another service that lost tons of data. Not sure if it was LiveJournal or some other. And yeah, people probably don't realize how valuable their blogs are getting. This blog has only been around for a few years, but I wouldn't want to lose it. I still miss one of my earlier blogs, that I deleted without thinking it through.

To be quite honest, if I was still at a $5/month host, I'd be making backups every day. At that price you can't really expect them to care as much as you do. One of the reasons I put a few ads up on this blog is to pay for top notch hosting.

Yeah, little web 2.0 bubbles tend to burst every now and then. I'm becoming less and less reliant on third-party services - especially ones that don't have fairly considerable financial backing and/or a reputable name. Instead I fork over $5 a month for web hosting and I run my own servers. I now have my own little web services for my blog, RSS aggregation, recipes, photographs, file storage, and the list grows as I find fun new servers to run. I suppose this makes my ISP the single point of failure, but they're a big company so I put my faith in their services.

Didn't LiveJournal lose/purge a whole bunch of user data as well? Somehow I empathize the most when it's blogs that are lost because people pour their hearts out, making them very valuable, irreplaceable resources.
