My Flickr widget will make your photostream fly…

Roy Tanck‘s Flick Widget requires Flash Player 9 or better.

If you like, you can now try the Flickr widget I blogged about a little while ago. This is the first time I’ve released something like this, but I’m pretty confident it’ll work. I’ve set up a page on this blog where you can enter your Flickr feed, along with some other details, and create your personalized version of the widget. It’s generates an HTML code snippet that you can copy-paste into your website. In fact I just used it to create the widget embedded on the left.

One thing I was concerned about was where I should put the Flash file. If this thing should become popular, it could cause lots of traffic. That’s why I chose to host it at Amazon’s S3 service. I’ll blog some more about this soon because it’s is an interesting service, but what it comes down to is that S3 is an extremely reliable way of hosting files. Even if there’s a little hick-up here at roytanck.com, the widget will still be served. That means no big empty hole in your blog, unless Flickr is down. Or S3. Both highly unlikely.

Let me know if you run into anything. I’m pretty sure the widget code will remain the same for the foreseeable future. All URLs are final, so if you successfully generate the widget, it will continue to function, even if I need to make little adjustments to the form or the Flash movie later on.

  1. Been using your excellent flickr thumbnail gadget very successfully on my blog. Worked great with Opera, Firefox and IE9 etc.

Today noticed (after clearing browser cache) that Opera is displaying error message about requiring Flash Player 9 or greater (Flash 11 installed). IE9 is just showing blank area.

Also noticed today (possibly unrelated) that I cannot edit gadgets or posts from main blog anymore despite being logged in.

Noticed that Google started using country re-directs earlier this year on their blog site. Mine re-directs …com to …co.uk – not sure if that has any bearing on issue.

Tried fresh gadget code – same issue on preview.

    • I’m sorry about this Richard. Something went wrong when I move my hosting account to a new server on Monday. There was a line in the htaccess file for media.roytanck.com (from where the Flash file is served) that needed to be removed. This caused server errors when attempting to embed the file.

  3. Hello Mr Roy!

Thanks for such attractive Flicker widget.

It worked well in spit of the background of it. the problem that I faced is changing the color of the widget background. I took a shot to the preview of the widget. http://api.ning.com/files/IAsYlcPT9mprTnet3xjYigSjDi7We3pOr6jsnUK0XCOAzSY93FSpW0E*c7bZwKriUKZrKoGhbN-9ly91-EPtMb2z042o9Xln/widget1.png

When I added the code to a site, It became with light blue background! I don’t want that background! I just want a transparent background.
Here is a shot for the widget with the background.

    • Can you check if there’s anything like “wmode” in the code snippet, and whether it gets set to “transparent”? If not, please email me the code.

  7. Hi Roy
Thanks for this – really love it, I have it on my site, been using and will recommend it, would love to see it as a wordress plugin like wp-cumulus, where it links within wordpess for photo, great to see it for videos too, dont mind paying for it too – as a paid plugin

    Thanks again

    Andy

  8. Hi,

I’m a blogger beginner (Blogspot). I tried to use your widget on my blog but it seems not working. I don’t understand why. I really don’t know what I could do to fix this problem…

    • First thing is to check your blog for errors using validator.w3.org . If there are no errors, and the preview on my site works, the widget should work on your site too.
