Hi Roy,
Have read this blog but still don’t get it – How do I prevent for that my cloud-tags font-size get too big? Do I have too many? Is it the size of the actual area? Or….
Please give me an advice
PS. Like your site!
diagonal
Comment by diagonal — May 5, 2009 @ 8:35 am
Hi Diagonal. You can set the font sizes (min and max) directly using the wp_tag_cloud params. You could also use the ‘number’ param to limit the total number of tags to something less than the default 45. If overlapping tags is part of your issue, try setting the ‘distribute evenly’ option too.

I have some problems if I run the flash Cloud Tag.
Working fine in FF, but IE cannot open the site then!
If I use the regular tagcloud it is working fine!
Any ideas why?
Andre
Comment by Andre — May 10, 2009 @ 9:43 pm
He Andre. Are you using WordPress? The link you used with your comment takes me to what looks like a non-wordpress site… But it sounds like SWFObject is having trouble with the markup errors in your site. Tis is usually the case when one browser fails while others manage to render the page.
Comment by Roy — May 11, 2009 @ 11:26 am
hi Roy i have a problem.. I need to create 3 different tag cloud related to 3 different database. The tags will put inside the database manually throught 3 different forms.
I already created the forms for submit the tags and the database but i can’t connect it with the plugin.. Could you help me?
Sorry but i’m not an expert of php and mysql.. Thank you!
Comment by Ted — May 11, 2009 @ 7:17 pm
Hi Ted. The trick is to output the tag cloud in the same way WordPress does. If you can create a string with several links like the default tag cloud, you should be able to feed those to the Flash movie. I assume you’re read this?
Comment by Roy — May 12, 2009 @ 12:27 pm
This tag cloud is very funny indeed!
Do it respect also accessibility rules?
Comment by Ros — May 14, 2009 @ 11:13 am
I’m afraid accessibility isn’t going to be helped by this, but it does output the regular text cloud (made invisible through CSS), so screen readers may pick up on that.

Hello Roy.
I would like to know if this plugin work in other websites that doesn’t use WordPress. If it does, than you mind telling me how?
Thanks.
Comment by Ashley — May 17, 2009 @ 11:00 pm
Hi Ashley. Several people have ported WP-Cumulus to other platforms. I keep a list here. The last entry in that list contains additional documentation that could help you port the project or use it in a static html site.

Hi Roy,
Awesome creation!!!!
Please can you advise How i can adjust or edit the code to make it compatible with iWeb 08, probably to enter it as a Snippet…?
Thanks

Hi ‘Elf’. I’m not familiar with the specifics of iWeb ’08, but this page might help: http://www.roytanck.com/2008/05/19/how-to-repurpose-my-tag-cloud-flash-movie/

Comment by Sashi — June 12, 2009 @ 8:26 am
can this be applied to blogger too?
Comment by Daisy — June 13, 2009 @ 12:24 am
Great Plugin! Awesome.
I realized that there is a funny data output for google like that:
***
[FLASH]
Tag
Dateiformat: Shockwave Flash
Tag.
http://www.mietboerse.net/wp-content/plugins/wp-cumulus/tagcloud.swf?r=6836843 –
***
Of course that is not very sexy and does not contain helpful information.
Is there a way to fix that?
Problem to solve:
- it is listed as link but will not work when click it – should link to search list where tag is used
- it has not information in it – should name the tag name itself and if possible a description note
Thanks for reply and help on that.
Regards
Comment by Inspirator — June 14, 2009 @ 3:52 pm
Hi Stephan. I’m not quite sure what you’re saying, but it looks like you told Google to either look for SWF files or for a tagcloud. That the movie gets found at all is somewhat of an unwanted side effect. It countains no data, and isn’t very helpful when you’re looking for content. But my plugin does output the regular tag cloud too, so all the keywords will be in your page, visible to search engines, and linking to the appropriate WordPress tag page.

Can this be used with a standard website or in my case, Shopify?
Comment by ignacio Z — July 12, 2009 @ 12:30 am
Hi Ignacio. There is a plain html version, but it makes more sense to tie this to your CMS’s tagging or category system. As far as I know there’s no Shopify port yet.

Dear Roy,
What an awesome tag cloud!!! I have tried to make it work on my wordpress.org (freslhy 2 theme). Its driving me nuts for weeks now. I have activated the plug in but I get the message: “WP Cumulus Flash tag cloud by Roy Tanck requires Flash Player 9 or better.” on my blog.
I have the latest flash, and have strolled your FAQ and other fora for an answer. I validated with validator.w3.org
Any idea what might be wrong?
thank you in advance
Thieu
Comment by Thieu — July 17, 2009 @ 2:18 pm
Hi Thieu. Looks like you got it working?
Comment by Roy — July 18, 2009 @ 6:26 pm
Hi Roy,
it’s a really piece of work but I’ve had a problem with accents. My problem is not that they’re not showing, they are. I actually use the ezcumulus extension for eZPublish but I guess the problem is not related to eZ.
this is a part of my source (and it seems fine)
so.addVariable(“tagcloud”, “Asnières Budget Plan de la ville Sébastien Pietrasanta conseil municipal maire “);
and for instance, if i click on “Asnières”, instead of /content/keyword/asni%C3%A8res (which is the correct urlencoding), it redirects to /content/keyword/asni%E8res, hence a blank page…
ps : I’ve found this (in french) http://forum.dotclear.net/viewtopic.php?id=34559&p=4 where the probklem seems to be mentionned but couldn’t find anything here. (btw, the accents do appear in the flash, only the links with accented words are corrupted in some way)..
Any ideas?
Thank you
Gwenal

Comment by Jutzi — August 15, 2009 @ 6:00 pm
Lovely plugin!
I’m working on a site that could really benefit from this plugin as long as I can call it in 2 different modes:
1. Show only tags in the cloud when displayed on tag archive pages
2. Show only categories in the cloud when displayed on category archive pages
In all cases, I’d like to use the theme code approach (wp_cumulus_insert). BTW – All instances of the cloud will be in the main body of the page (no sidebar usage).
How do I get there?
Comment by Gilad — August 18, 2009 @ 10:53 pm
Hi Gilad. Too bad you’re not using shortcodes. That would have made this very easy. The wp_cumulus_insert function does not allow you to override parameters, so you’ll need to hack the plugin quite extensively to get what you want. The function that generates the output does accept variables, so you could try to forward them somehow. I won’t be able to guide you much further though without getting my hands dirty (for which I lack time currently).

hello roy, thats great to see the tag cloud,i dont want to use by using wordpress, can it be possible to write using javascript/jquery/ajax.i have developed all other pages by using simple html
Comment by Roopa — August 21, 2009 @ 1:35 pm
Brilliant stuff !
I’m integrating it on a dynamic page into a ASP.net website. The XML is generated on the fly from dynamic database content.
How do I force FLASH to refresh the content each time, and really show new content rather than the cache version ?
Comment by Mike — August 25, 2009 @ 1:09 pm
Hi Roy,
Nice Tagcloud you’ve here! It works fine with HTML/ PHP/ ASP websites. Now, I’m building my own Flash-based weblog/ portfolio/ photosite and I really would like to use your Tagcloud embedded in de Flash website.
I tried importing the .SWF into my Flashwebsite. It comes up with some result, but not the result I’d like.
An error occurs: “This file has been protected by its author and cannot be imported”. Is there a way to load this SWF into my timeline as a movieclip? Or isn’t this possible at all?
Hopefully you’re willing to help me with this problem!
Thanks in advance,
Frits
Comment by Frits — September 2, 2009 @ 10:46 am
Hi Frits. The sources for the Flash movie are available under GPL at wordpress.org. However, the movie is not intended to be loaded into another Flash project, and you’d need to thoroughly rewrite it to get it working. The most pressing issues are the flashvars (which would change scope) and the scaling algorithm (which is based on the stage size).

Comment by aura_anar — September 8, 2009 @ 8:38 am
Hi Roy.
How difficult would it be to replace your sphere with a torus ?
I’ve been doing some digging and reckon that a torus has a larger surface area than a sphere, depending on the diameter of the tube.
The trouble would be choosing how the mouse input moved the words around.
Great plugin all the same.

Cam.

Very smooth plugin. I like that it adds a certain dynamic feeling to an otherwise static part of the page (sidebar).
Good work Roy!
Comment by Derek — October 5, 2009 @ 3:27 pm
Hi Ray. Your tag cloud is a hit! I wanted to know if you could put a (very faint) background image in front of the cloud so that it could visually blend in to the website (using say a colour or graphic). Take a look at http://www.sworphegar.com. I’d like it to have a (very very faint) bicycle icon behind it. only if you get to this mail
Comment by Edwin James Lynch — October 8, 2009 @ 11:16 am
Edwin,
Although I am not Ray, I believe I read your answer.
The development version of WP-Cumulus which is down-loadable from here: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-cumulus.zip allows editing of the base “fla” file. That’s a great place to embed your static (or even moving) bicycle watermark.
It also enables the same widget control options once installed into WordPress.
I hope this helps out.good luck!
