One of the few problems wth free software is the fact that the authors usually do not have huge marketing budgets to promote their work. This is why I didn’t know about Synergy until Matt Cutts blogged about it. It’s also why it took me ages to find a decent backup tool. I was just about to pay for a mediocre shareware solution when I came across Cobian Backup.
This program used to be free as in beer, but it’s recently turned free as in speech as well. Unfortunately, the reason for going open source is that Luis Cobian doesn’t have the time to keep developing this magnificent piece of software. I sincerely hope someone will pick this up and give it the attention it deserves.
CB is a feature-rich and straightforward backup software with all the right features and no bloat at all. It’s kept my files safe for about a year now without a single hickup and is a pleasure to use. Configuration is a breeze, and it allows you to do simple unscheduled backups or to set up complex routines with the program running as a service. This makes it suitable for beginners as well as advanced users.
